First Mower

By Catherine Daly

I am not going to espouse any short stories in
which lawn mowers clack
-James Schuyler, "Freely Espousing"

Leaves of grass straight, standing steady,
avant guard blades ready to mulch and pulp
fertilizing puree, come May,
greener grass like a crop.

He pulls the starter and all creation grows,
phrenology illustration turned chia pet,
the known world a head, the ether
humming, fueled,

moons slung like rocks from the blades,
a weed whacker true
as endless southern night

lyrical moon, fireflies,
and slightly ominous kudzu.
