We Swallow(ed) Spiders in our Sleep

Zachary C. Bush

and honey stains on white t-shirts attract ants
You look so peaceful tonight
While two cockroaches rest atop
Your eyelids shut, you are

Next to me, snoring
While I lust for
The other woman
I barely knew

You are loud in your sleep
Scaring the roaches
Down the bridge of
Your crooked nose

and I am alone
Remembering the morning
When we moved into this house
Gnats sucked the sweat
Shine from your legs
Until they had their fill

They drowned in you
I watched them, motionless
Freckle your creamy skin
I barely knew
