Campus Visits

By Robert Demaree

I used to visit colleges in my work,
Button-down cordovans sharply pressed.
Instead of insurance, I had students to offer them.
Later I took my child on her college trip
And loved the places she loved
But did not know why at the time.

So now there are days to fill with travel
And we drive through campuses again, her mother and I.
I stood outside the chapel in the rain
And thought I heard Caroline singing.
At my father’s school we checked the files,
Thumbed through archived cards:
We did not find his name.
