                                                Optimists

The speaker from the Optimists’ Club tells us to imagine

the world in a hundred years.

Everyone here and all the people we know on this earth

would be dead, transformed to dust, good names and bad

evaporated into who knows what kind of air.

Hushed hall.  And then we come back

to ourselves and don’t believe

him at all, our faith in our bodies strong as ever,

pulse, and stomachs alert

to hunger’s delightful pull, sweet

background noise of sex and our buckets full

of old resentments – sweaty hands and enough spring

left in our knees to pull away, out into

the cold and sunny afternoon.
