Checklist
By Thomas Reynolds
A sparrow in the eaves
with one careless stone.
The bobtailed kitten
hidden beneath the tire.
But until this moment never an owl
sweeping out of a ditch at midnight
toward the quarry's edge,
back to some thick-leaved oak
tangled with vines,
one knotted limb
scattered with bones and fur,
cracked mouse skull
with one thin hair
listing in the breeze.
The bumper, scanning air,
seizes the thick body.
Wings flap furiously.
Eyes like black river stones
roll across the windshield
as if tossed by some bored farm boy,
skipping onto pavement
in the rear-view mirror
five, six, seven times
before sinking into the dark.
